Jazz Legend Herbie Hancock - Rockit When Jazz legend (and we are talking about one of Miles Davis's keyboardists here) decided to turn his hand to pop music he completely changed it forever - this is probably the earliest beginnings of rap and hip hop. The first popular tune to include scratching and turntablism. This revolutionary track also came with a music video decades ahead of its time. UK directing team Godley and Creme motorised human sculptures from sculptor James Whiting and got them to move in rhythm with the music. Herbie Hancock proved that he could turn his hand to anything with this track and the results might look slightly dated now but this was seriously groundbreaking at the time as no one was doing anything like it musically or visually. Enjoy this great clip. Herbie Hancock, the man from Miles Davis’ “second great quintet” and from Blue Note who brought us Chameleon and Rockit, is going be performing on Thursday the 4th at Finlandia Talo as part of his tour for his latest album/project The Imagine Project. Chicago originating Mr. Hancock going 70 will be arriving to Finland with his The Imagine Project including the drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes and vocalist Kristina Train to name a few. Herbie Hancock is one of the better known and celebrated jazz musicians of all time. This pianist, bandleader and composer was already known as a prodigy growing up in Chicago, Illinois. After working with names like Donald Byrd and Coleman Hawkins at young age, Hancock’s true breakthrough happened when he joined the forces in Miles Davis Quintet in 1963 being 23-years-old. While in the Davis’ band, Mr. Hancock also recorded tons of records for Blue Note label both under his own name and as a sideman for other musicians, from which most where other great jazzists. The man recorded classics influential 60′s jazz albums like Empyrean Isles and Maiden Voyage. In the late sixties Mr. Hancock was apparently back late from his honeymoon in Brazil, and had to leave Davis’ band, after which he soon also left Blue Note to start recording for Warner Bros. Records. During the late 60′s he found that R&B and electronic funk sound that he’s also pretty freaking famous for. Fat Albert Rotunda album as a soundtrack for Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids show and a jazz-rock fusion Mwandishi started the synthesizer period that lasted almost through the 70′s. In the late 70′s Herbie Hancock under Columbia returned to his roots, and put together VSOP Quintet including everyone except Davis from the old 60′s Miles Davis Quintet, but before mid-80′s he was already on his next adventure with future jazz combining disco, pop and future sounds. From this period shall be mentioned the very much loved Future Shock album including the massive hit with GrandMixer DXT and Autodrive (pictured above). From there on Mr. Hancock has went on winning an Oscar in 1986 for ‘Round Midnight, in which he also acted in. He then took a break, left Columbia and in 1994 returned and has been occupied with a million on going projects ever since. To name some let’s name drop the album The New Standard with an all-star line-up covering songs from Nirvana and The Beatles for example; Future2Future album in 2001 with Bill Laswell and Rob Swift; and co-producing RoboCop in 2008 for Kanye’s 808′s & Heartbreak album. Finally last summer, in June to be more precise, Hancock released his latest album, The Imagine Project, also made into a documentary. Recorded and shot in various locations around the planet, and including a huge punch of collaborations with some extremely talented musicians, the project continues a later Hancock’s personal theme in making the world a better place for everyone to live in it. Harmony, love and peace kind a deal. World sounds and cool ass instruments make this album quite a blast. But in all fairness, at least subjectively from the very beginning of the album when Pink, no wait, cross that over, P!nk together with Heidi Klum’s Seal throw a take on John Lennon’s Imagine, there’s just something very wrong in all that corniness. Cool album though, hands down, and arguably for a good cause. Thursday noght at Finlandia might be pretty sweet too, given/hoped that P!nk and Seal won’t surprise the crowd by coming on stage. Susan Tedeschi and Wayne Shorter on the other hand should. Check Lippupalvelu for tickets. Скачать " Herbie Hankock - Rock It (1983) (Саундрек из фильма Курьер) "
